Automotive Product Inspections and Supplier Audits
How to Avoid Costly Defects and Insure Compliance
Supplier or Factory Audits
Factory Audits often include:
- ISO/TS 16949 and ISO 9001 automotive manufacturing standards compliance audit.
- Production Parts Approval Process (PPAP).
- Process audits to identify the root cause(s) of issues on-site and recommends corrective actions.
- Environmental Management (ISO 14001) to assess environmental impact.
- Social Responsibility (CSR) audits using the SA8000, ISO 26000 or other applicable CSR standards.
- Retail Compliance Pro QC assists in preparation for vendor certification programs.
Quality Control Inspections often include:
- Pre-production (first article) inspections that help you in the process of approving parts/components/products.
- In-process inspections to monitor that the established product methodology and techniques are being followed and to verify that manufacturing process can flow smoothly towards meeting the product’s engineering specification requirements and reliability.
- Pre-shipment inspections to check the product’s quality throughout the relationship with the supplier.

UNDERSTANDING THE SUPPLIER AUDIT PROCESS
What services does Pro QC provide to the automotive industry?
Pro QC is a quality solutions provider. That means we are able to assist our clients in meeting their quality objectives by utilizing a broad range of QC services. For the automotive industry, we specialize in the following:
ISO/TS 16949 and ISO 9001
ISO/TS 16949 is an ISO 9001 standard in which technical specifications were added related to the automotive industry. According to ISO Survey 2014, ISO 16949 for the automotive sector shows accelerated progression with a commendable 8%, signaling that economic recovery in the auto industry is holding up.
The benefits of performing ISO/TS 16949 based audits go beyond required certification. The audit is a method to assess compliance to the ISO/TS 16949 standard of manufacturing automotive components and parts. The purpose of ISO 9001 and ISO/TS 16949 audits is aimed at the development of a quality management system that provides for continual improvement, emphasizes defect prevention, and facilitates the reduction of variation and waste in the supply chain.
This Technical Specification, in conjunction with ISO 9001, defines the quality management system requirements for the design and development, production and, when relevant, installation and service of automotive-related products. It is applicable to sites of the organization where customer-specified parts, for production and/or service, are manufactured. It can be applied throughout the automotive supply chain.
Components of the ISO/TS 16949 audit include:
- Quality Management System
- Management Responsibility
- Resource Management
- Product Realization
- Measurement, Analysis & Improvement

Production Parts Approval Process (PPAP) is a try production process usually applied in Manufacturer of Automotive component to ensure to verify if all customer engineering design record and specification requirements are properly understood by the manufacturer and that the process established (Man, machines, methods, Raw material) has the potential to produce product consistently meeting these requirements during an actual volume production run at the quoted production rate. Data are collected during the PPAP and analysis to make such judgment.
During PPAP, Pro QC can assist in the development of Process Flow Diagram, PFMEA, Control Plan, MSA and GR&R, Cpk calculation, including monitoring or approval a complete Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) at your supplier, following AIAG standard.
Process audits help identify the root cause(s) of issues on-site and recommends corrective actions for continuous improvement.

Environmental Management (ISO 14001)
ISO 14001 was published in 1996 and adopted early on within the automotive manufactures that required their suppliers become certified. The automobile industry currently is a leader in the United States for the number of organizations that are ISO 14001 certified.
An EMS is a set of management procedures and processes created to allow organizations the ability to analyze, control and reduce the environmental impact of its operations and services. Auditing against a standard such as ISO 14001 allows organizations to monitor the environmental performance and impacts on finite and natural resources such as air, water, soil and raw materials.
Social Responsibility (CSR)
SR audits evaluate suppliers using the SA8000, ISO 26000 or other applicable CSR standards such as Wal-mart, SEARS, ICTI, EICC…etc. These evaluations focus on health and safety, discrimination, disciplinary practices, working hours, compensation, management practices, forced labor, freedom of association, child labor laws and ethical practices.

Quality Control Product Inspections
Pro QC inspects first-article samples prior to volume production. This verifies that product specifications are being met and avoids unnecessary reengineering work later.
These on-site inspections evaluate samples of your products selected during the manufacturing process. This confirms the quality of your product and allows any necessary changes to be addressed early on, reducing rework time and costs.
During a pre-shipment inspection, our engineers verify that finished goods conform to your specifications.
